365 Grateful: 04.27.2014

365 - 04-27-2014
Today I’m grateful that I grew up influenced more by nature than by marketing. As a child who roamed the woods with her trusty horse and multitudes of dogs, I knew most of the plants that grew in the deep shade of hulking trees. So tonight, when my sister dragged me out to her ever-expanding garden to see her jack-in-the-pulpit, I was instantly transported back to the sights and sounds and smells of those deep woods. The Arisaema triphyllum (jack-in-the-pulpit, bog onion, brown dragon, Indian turnip, American wake robin, or wild turnip) was a fixture of my childhood, much as Barbies™ and Hot Wheels™ were for my friends. I still wouldn’t trade them a strange green flower for any number of dolls or cars.
