When a native son was killed while serving in the military, it drew the attention of the Westboro Baptist Church, which threatened to protest during the funeral. The Patriot Guard rallied and hundreds of bikers lined the street in front of the church and along the route there. Community members also came out to protect and support. Among them was this young child, who sat along the curb amid the legs of veterans and civilians, clutching and waving her small flag. She projected such innocence, completely unaware of the uneasy political and religious overtones that had drawn most of these people there. She captured my eye and my camera: she embodied what I think of as “one.”
